About the Event
Piscataquog Land Conservancy's Nissitissit Headwaters Preserve has several bird and turtle species of conservation concern in NH who nest on the property. These species depend on shrubland and early successional forest habitats to nest in. These habitats provide them with protection from predators and abundant food sources. Cutting back some of the older and overgrown areas of the forest will help maintain the vital resources this type of habitat provides.
Volunteers will be provided an overview of the birds that have been identified on the property and a better understanding of the habitat management task at hand, while also getting to spend the day outside helping the wildlife.
Volunteers are being asked to help for three hours to cut back shrubs and saplings in the nesting areas.
What to bring
Volunteers should wear appropriate clothing and expect to get dirty. Layers are recommended as the temperature in the spring can fluctuate and long pants are highly recommended. Close toe shoes are a must (hiking boots or work boots are preferred). Please also bring plenty of bug spray as there will be a likely chance of ticks. Please also bring plenty of water and a couple of snacks. Volunteers may also want to bring a handsaw or loppers, we will be able to provide some but may not have enough for everyone depending on how many people attend.
Youth Instructions
All ages are welcome, though children under the age of 10 may struggle. Any children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult!
