About the Event
*NEW DATE: Sunday, July 28
This is a field excursion to learn about bird banding at a MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship) station on the Black Mountain Forest in North Sutton, NH. On this day, it will be demonstration only, but people can come and learn about MAPS stations and future opportunities for volunteers to assist at this particular station.
Join the Forest Society and researcher Lindsay Herlihy for a unique experience to watch bird banding up close at the Black Mountain Banding Station on the Black Mountain Forest in North Sutton, NH. This station, newly established in 2024, is part of the MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity & Survivorship) program that collects data on local breeding birds.
"The early bird catches the worm" is a good metaphor for this field trip, since we'll begin at 6:30 am to have the best chance of seeing a number of birds captured, banded, weighed/measured, and released. Principal researcher Lindsay Herlihy will explain all of the data being collected on each bird and why MAPS data is important has helped scientists understand more about the health of bird populations across North America.
Pre-registration is required for this FREE event. We will meet in the main parking lot of Kearsarge Regional High School (457 N Rd, North Sutton, NH 03260) at 6:30am and proceed in one or two cars from there about ½ mile to the end of Mastin Road (limited parking). Please try to be on time even though it is early!
