About the Event
Come hear Iain MacLeod, Executive Director of the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, talk about the Motus Wildlife Tracking System.
This international collaborative research network, which uses radio telemetry to track small flying organisms (birds, bats and insects), now has about 20 receiver stations in New Hampshire.
Lightweight transmitters are affixed to the animals and then tracked by a network of strategically-placed stations. There are over 2,000 receiving stations in 34 countries and more than 60,000 animals have been tagged.
Iain has been involved in coordinating the installation of two local stations near Sandwich and has been tracking the bird species recorded by both towers.
He will share the stories of some of these birds and discuss the wider implications for conservation of the Motus system. Admission is free.
