About the Event

Do you love spending time outdoors, watching the seasons change and exploring NH’s communities from parks and gardens to forests, fields, and wetlands? You can do this and support NH’s biodiversity at the same time by becoming a NH Seed Seeker - a volunteer opportunity started last season in partnership with the NH State Forest Nursery and UNH Cooperative Extension.

By becoming a NH Seed Seeker, you will be identifying and collecting native seeds in collaboration with the NH State Forest Nursery. Last year the Nursery grew and sold over 350,000 native NH seedlings that were planted statewide and beyond helping to increase the state’s biodiversity and with plants with local genotypes.

We will provide a half day training at the Nursery that will include:

  • what we need to collect
  • species identification and resources
  • when to collect seed
  • protocols on where to collect seed and ethically how much
  • how to handle the seed once collected, and delivering it to the nursery
  • a tour of the nursery that includes what happens once the seed is delivered

Once the Seed Seekers are trained, they will be turned loose to see what they can find! Even having people watch certain species for us could be very helpful, such as white oak or shagbark hickory, and notifying us when they are dropping, because we need to collect the day the nuts are falling, or else the squirrels get them all before we get there.

THERE IS NO FEE FOR THIS TRAINING

What to bring

Dress in clothes you don't mind getting dusty, and comfortable walking/hiking shoes for the nursery tour. Depending on weather, sunscreen, bug spray and/or rain gear could be useful.
