About the Event
Join Salem Sound Coastwatch for our Winter Waterbird Survey to help monitor waterbird populations throughout Salem Sound and the North Shore.
Survey Date: Sunday, February 15 | 8:30 AM
Locations: Multiple sites across Salem, Beverly, Danvers, Marblehead, Manchester, Swampscott, and Lynn
This survey is a team-based effort. Volunteers will work in small groups led by an experienced team leader, making this a great opportunity for birders of all experience levels. New birders are encouraged to participate, no prior survey experience is required! We are also seeking additional team leaders. If you are confident in your winter waterbird identification, consider signing up as a team leader. Team leaders are responsible for eBird data collection and for guiding groups that include less experienced birders.
The data collected during this survey is used to track long-term population trends, monitor migration patterns, and help assess the overall health of our waterways. These surveys have been conducted consistently since the late 1990s, making volunteer participation essential to maintaining this valuable long-term dataset.
What to bring
Dress for the anticipated weather for the day. The survey will be conducted outside at multiple locations around Salem Sound. This may involve walking through snow, ice and/or mud. Binoculars are not necessary, but would be helpful.
