About the Event

Join NH State Parks staff for a hands-on stone trailwork workshop on Mount Monadnock. This two-day training is part of the Monadnock Volunteer Trail Crew program, but it is open to anyone interested in learning how stone can be used to build durable, sustainable trail structures.

Participants are encouraged to attend both days, but may attend only one day if needed.

This workshop will focus on the full process of building trail features from rock. Volunteers will learn about tools of the trade, how to find and select trailside stones, safe team-based stone moving techniques, splitting and shaping stone, and creating “crush” for trail construction. If time allows, participants may also help set one or two stones in the ground.

The goal is to give volunteers a practical, real-world introduction to stone trailwork from start to finish: pulling stones from the landscape, moving them safely, shaping them for use, and turning natural materials into something useful for the trail. Safe lifting techniques and specialty tools will help demonstrate how even small teams or solo trailbuilders can move boulders more confidently and efficiently.

Training, instruction, and tools will be provided by NH State Parks staff. There is no fee to participate.
