About the Event

The White Mountain National Forest contains dozens of abandoned orchards from former settlements. Forest Service Wildlife Biologists have prioritized these orchards as a place of sustenance and refuge for wildlife. As volunteers, we help these orchards persist and be productive. Pruning includes removing the brush from under the trees, dead branches and non-productive sappers and cutting back surroundings to ensure adequate sunlight. We gather the cuttings into piles that wildlife can use for shelter during the winter.

No experience necessary, training provided. The Forest Service provides the tools. Loppers, bow and pole saws are used. We will meet roadside, grab some tools and typically walk about 1/4 mile to the orchard. For your time, you will receive hours credit towards an annual WMNF parking pass. I do not believe there is cell service at this location.

Once you sign up, you will be directed to the US Forest Service Volunteer Service Agreement which you must sign, along with some reading material. You will also receive the specific parking location where we will meet. Rain will postpone the event.

There are four other pruning workdays planned for 2023. The event is led by Bill Tarkulich, a trained and sanctioned Forest Service volunteer leader, having led pruning groups for several years now, and it is always an enjoyable, casual day. Bill is trained as a Wilderness First Responder (2 weeks training beyond wilderness first aid). You don't need to be in great shape. Spend time getting to know other volunteers! Thank you for giving back to your forest.

What to bring

The orchard is embedded in the forest, so prepare to see a tick or two and dress properly: long-sleeved shirts, long pants tucked into socks. Treat your clothes with Permethrin (I will bring a bottle that you can spray on your clothes.)

Youth Instructions

Youth 16 and under may attend when chaperoned by an adult.
