About the Event

On Saturday, May 15th, from 10am to 1pm in Tamworth, Natural Resources Field Specialist with UNH Cooperative Extension Wendy Scribner will lead a hands-on workshop on planting trees to promote healthy forests and streambank restoration. And we mean hands on! This session is limited to 10 hearty individuals, age 14 or over.

We will meet at one of GMCG’s conservation easement properties in Tamworth and hike 10 minutes across some steep and uneven terrain to a site where trees and shrubs are needed to restore the forest floor and the banks of a small stream. Having a sturdy pair of boots will be important.

Species to be planted include white pine, red oak, red maple, silky dogwood, crabapple, red osier dogwood, juneberry serviceberry, high bush cranberry, and arrowwood viburnum. You will learn how to properly handle seedlings and how to plant trees and shrubs to ensure their survival. Wendy will share her knowledge accumulated over 30 years as a forester in the woods of New Hampshire. You will expand your understanding of how our forests can be cared for and managed to enhance tree growth and diversity; mitigate erosion; and attract wildlife. Refreshments will be provided but please bring your own water bottle.

Donations of $5, $10 or more will help cover the costs of saplings and supplies, and everyone participating will go home with a young tree or shrub to plant on their property. This workshop will be open to the first 10 individuals who register. For more information, or to register, write to water2@gmcg.org. http://www.gmcg.org/tree-planting-workshop/ Q. What to Bring R.
