About the Event

AMC's backcountry huts in the White Mountains are looking for new Information Volunteers to welcome visitors, orient them to the facility, give trail advice, talk about hiking, and promote AMC's mission – connecting people with the outdoors.

Essential qualifications for Hut Info Volunteers include being a currently active White Mountain hiker; recent prior experience staying overnight multiple times in AMC huts; an outgoing, friendly personality; knowledge about trail maps, outdoor gear, and backcountry safety; and the ability to communicate well with a diverse group of visitors and staff. The best fit is someone who has a passion for hiking in the White Mountains, loves staying at AMC huts, and enjoys talking with other hikers (especially talking with day hikers, AT thru-hikers, and folks who may be visiting the mountains for the first time). The Huts Info Vol role is important in all weather conditions. Volunteers need to feel comfortable and confident hiking alone to and from huts in all types of inclement White Mountain weather, including rain, wind, cold temps, hot temps, etc.

Benefits: Free meals & lodging, and retail discounts!

Training: Training includes an in-person day on Saturday, June 14th, as well as a few online sessions through Zoom in May.

Time Commitment: Volunteers commit to volunteering at least two weekends a year (additional volunteering is welcome!), for at least three years.

*Please note that the date listed on Nature Groupie is a tentative deadline for expressing interest because the volunteer roster may fill up early. The actual volunteering dates for new volunteers would be in June, July, and/or August.

To Learn More: Reach out to Kyra Salancy, Volunteer Programs Manager, at amcvolservices@outdoors.org. Some volunteer roles fill up early, so please reach out now (February) if you may be interested.
