About the Event

The U.S. Forest Service has created several treeless "Wildlife Openings" in the White Mountain National Forest to provide animals small and large with secluded and protected places to forage fresh greens, sleep and rest. None of these sites are publicized to forest visitors.

Each year, we trim back 3-4 years of growth in selected areas. Some areas include orchard trees, this one does not. We spend the day removing brush and small saplings at ground level. It's a great way to give back a little bit to the forest we all love.

SKILLS

No ladders, no climbing. We will also build small mammal habitat from out cuttings. No experience necessary, we will train you. You don't need to be in great shape either. Take as many breaks as you want; If you can garden, you can do this.

SAFETY

Safety is job #1 at the U.S. Forest Service. You will need to sign our volunteer service agreement and provide emergency contact information. This agreement entitles you to accident/injury insurance while volunteering for the National Forest. Your leader will inquire as to any medications and medical conditions which may affect you during the day. Leaders are trained in Forest Service safety and skills and first aid skills and procedures.

MEETING LOCATION

We will meet at the start of the Discovery Trail, located on Kancamangus Highway about 10 minutes from Lincoln.

CAMPING

There is a nearby, WMNF campground (fee). We also offer volunteers a separate camping area (no facilities, but picnic table, fire pit and tent pad (a square filled with level sand). I will be staying there.

DOGS

Dogs are OK as long as they do not create a hazard or interfere with volunteers. If necessary, we may request you leash your dog.

EARN HOURS TOWARDS A FREE PARKING PASS

Sixteen (16) hours of volunteer service, accumulated over any period of time entitle you to a White Mountain National Forest annual parking pass. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or wish to register.

Come for a few hours or the whole day. It's a beautiful time of year to be in the mountains!

What to bring

EQUIPMENT I recommend work gloves, good boots (you may step into a some muddy spot), eye protection, lunch and a hat or sun protection. We will carry in loppers, bow saws and hand clippers. If you have tools, please bring them along. If you don't, I'll be bringing extra tools. TICKS As this is an area that attracts much wildlife, we need to be aware of ticks. Long sleeve shirt and pants tucked into your socks work well. Spray your clothes with Permethrin ahead of time (I will bring some). We also suggest spraying your backpack.
