About the Event

AMC's White Mountain Huts are looking for new Volunteer Naturalists. These volunteers provide educational programming in AMC backcountry huts, primarily through evening programs, as well as short talks or walks after breakfast. Volunteer Naturalists also help guests with activity planning, orient them to the facility, and offer advice about hiking trails, outdoor gear, and backcountry safety.

Essential qualifications: experience hiking White Mountain trails; prior guest experience at an AMC backcountry hut; an outgoing, friendly personality; and the ability to plan and deliver natural history programs (without a projector/computer and without internet). The best fit for a Volunteer Naturalist in the Huts is someone who loves hiking in the White Mountains, loves staying at AMC huts and talking with other hut guests, has at least a couple of relevant topics they particularly like to learn and share about, and is comfortable leading talks and walks.

Benefits: Receive free meals and lodging (shared bunkroom), and retail discounts, while volunteering.

Schedule and Time Commitment: The Volunteer Naturalist stints are available as overnights on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays during the summer season. Most Naturalists will volunteer in the huts for two sets of dates each summer, with each of those volunteer stints spanning 2 or 3 nights. Volunteers are welcome to add additional dates if they have more availability. Volunteers should be interested in participating in the Volunteer Naturalist program for at least three years.

*Please note that the date listed on Nature Groupie is a tentative deadline for expressing interest because the volunteer roster may fill up early. The actual volunteering dates would be in July or August.

Training: The in-person training day is Sunday, June 15th. Training also includes a few online sessions in May/June, and those online sessions will be recorded for anyone with a schedule conflict.

To Learn More: Reach out to Kyra Salancy, Volunteer Programs Manager, at amcvolservices@outdoors.org. Some volunteer roles fill up early, so please reach out now (February) if you may be interested.
