About the Event
Learn about how instream flows (the flow needed to support wildlife and vegetation) are determined! The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Protection (NHDES) is currently working to determine the Instream Flow for the Ashuelot River. Staff will be on site on May 17 and 18 collecting data and welcome anyone to join them from 1:00 – 2:00 pm to learn more about how this data is collected, how the data is used and how this helps with river protection. There will be an equipment demonstration and the opportunity to observe the data collection process!
Additionally, there will be information presentations on two ongoing volunteer opportunities, the Volunteer River Assessment Program (volunteers collect regular river measurements and samples) and the Ashuelot River Local Advisory Committee (group that helps maintain and improve the river). We encourage students, teachers, environmentalists, river enthusiasts, and just about anyone else may enjoy learning how the scientific data required to develop plans to protect our state’s rivers is collected.
What to bring
Dress for the weather and a walk in the woods - the venue will comprise a tailgate presentation followed by an optional walk to a deployment station.
Youth Instructions
The presentation will describe the principles of scientific investigation and environmental regulation in terms understandable to all.
