About the Event

Reach out in February, if interested! AMC's White Mountain huts are looking for new Volunteer Naturalists for 4 (or more!) days/nights each summer. These volunteers provide educational programming in AMC backcountry huts, primarily through relevant and engaging evening programs, as well as short talks or walks after breakfast. You can choose your program topics to match your interests! Volunteer Naturalists also help welcome and orient visitors to the hut, offer trail advice, and promote AMC's mission.

In addition to our backcountry huts, we also have Vol Naturalist opportunities at our White Mountain lodges and our lodges in Maine's 100-Mile Wilderness region.

Essential qualifications: experience hiking White Mountain trails; love of learning about the natural world and sparking that interest in others; prior experience visiting an AMC hut; an outgoing, friendly personality; and the ability to plan and deliver natural history programs.

Volunteers must also be at least 18 years old, have their own transportation, and be confident hiking independently to/from huts.

Benefits: Receive free meals and lodging (shared bunkroom), and enjoy your time in the mountains!

Schedule and Time Commitment: Volunteer Naturalist stints are available as overnights on Sundays, Mondays, and/or Tuesday nights during the summer season. Most Naturalists will volunteer in the huts twice each year, with each of those volunteer stints spanning 2 or 3 nights. Volunteers are welcome to add additional dates if they have more availability. Volunteers should be interested in participating in the Volunteer Naturalist program for at least three years.

Training: Training includes an in-person training component on Sunday, June 16th as well as a few online sessions in May/June.

Listing Date: Please note that the February 29th date on Nature Groupie is listed because February is the best time to inquire about becoming an AMC Volunteer Naturalist. Some volunteer roles fill up by March, so please inquire now if you are interested.
