About the Event

Learn how to prune old apple trees at this free workshop. Orchards have long been an important feature of New England farms. As farms were abandoned, so were the trees. With gnarled trunks and tangled branches, the trees continue to provide food and shelter for wildlife. Renovating these old trees improves fruit for people and wildlife. There are a dozen old apple trees in and around an early successional opening in the Lee Town Forest. The workshop includes demonstrations and hands on opportunities.

The program will be led by Bryan Cassidy, a local farmer with experience in pruning old apple trees and a passion for mentoring others in this skill. Conservation Commission members will talk about wild apple trees in the landscape.

What to bring

This is an outdoor event. Dress for the weather. Pruning tools (loppers, pruning saws, pole saws) will be provided. Bring your own tools if you want. Work gloves and eye protection (safety glasses) are recommended while pruning, sawing, or brush pulling. Bring water and snacks.
