About the Event

Our state forest nursery depends on volunteer support to be able to provide native tree seedlings to the public at low cost. Our increasingly rainy summers mean that weeds are a bigger challenge than ever. Volunteers coming to help weed gives our baby trees the space they need to grow well quickly, to be able to be sent around the state to re-vegetation projects and backyards alike.

The great thing about weeding at the nursery is that each bed has only 1 tree species in it, so we just pull everything that is NOT that tree. You get to know the trees and how to recognize all the common weeds for when you're back on your own property or volunteering elsewhere!

You'll learn about native tree propagation and how long it takes for various tree species to go from seed to mature tree. We're hosting second-Tuesday-of-the-month weeding dates all season, and depending on when you volunteer, you may also get to collect seed, or help in the new Demonstration Garden project. New volunteers may also get a tour of the nursery.

What to bring

Dress for the weather on the day - we'll be working rain or shine (unless it's really pouring and the fields are too wet to be worked). Sturdy shoes/boots recommended, as well as a hat and work gloves. Bring hand tools for weeding - trowel, fork or weeding blades are ideal. You may want sun and insect protection. Bring your own water bottle. Refill water and light snacks will be provided.

Youth Instructions

Minimum age is 13.
