About the Event

Join the New Hampshire Green Crab Project to search the coast for green crabs!

Volunteers will contribute to a study evaluating the potential for a commercial fishery to help control this invasive species. Green crabs are edible, but because they are smaller than other popular crabs, they are not commonly harvested for food. To this end, NH Sea Grant is researching when green crabs molt to explore the feasibility of a soft-shell crab market (similar to blue crabs).

The event will start with a brief training in crab identification and survey methods. Then we will survey the coast together for green crabs!

Participation in this project requires walking on rocky shorelines and uneven terrain. If you have any accommodation requests (field guides, walking sticks, or more) please email Wells at: wellsley.costello@unh.edu.

What to bring

Dress for the weather! Sunscreen, a hat, and an old pair of sneakers, or boots. Even though buckets are provided, some people like to bring their own container and gloves to catch these frisky critters.
