About the Event
Coastal Research Volunteers (CRV) are collaborating with scientists for a new pilot project monitoring algae (seaweed) in Great Bay. Seaweed blooms can be a sign of estuarine ecosystem impairment, and so it is our aim to track the abundance of seaweed in Great Bay as an indicator of the health of the estuary. Volunteers will be responsible for photographing multiple quadrats to record percent cover of algae, as well as assisting scientists with estimating percent cover. There are multiple sites throughout the estuary that require volunteers to be walking through thick mud flats and rocky intertidal environments. Waking through mud flats is incredibly challenging; this is for the rough-and-tumble folks that don't mind losing their boot once in a while!
Very little research has been done on algae in the estuary, which makes volunteering for this project even more vital. We are also testing to see if this is a viable citizen science project for both the researchers and volunteers. Come join us for an authentic field experience!
